Drowning Prevention Week (DPW) aims to equip everybody across the UK and Ireland with the skills and knowledge, to make the right decisions about water safety. Teignbridge Leisure will be supporting Drowning Prevention Week for the first time. The session will run in place of standard swimming lessons at Newton Abbot Leisure Centre only.

What are we doing to support your child?

Drowning Prevention Week takes place on Saturday 19th June - Saturday 21st June 2021. During this week, our swimming lessons will focus on equipping all our swimmers with the skills and knowledge to make the right decisions about water safety.

Swimming isn’t just a critical lifesaving skill, it’s a skill that opens up a lifetime of fun and adventure in and on the water and throughout 2020 and 2021, cohorts of young people have missed out on the opportunity to swim, leaving a dramatic gap in school swimming and water safety education.

Example session

  • Identify the beach safety flags in the pool hall
  • Look at Safety posters on the poolside, talking about why you should never go swimming alone, identify areas of the pool – deep end, shallow end etc
  • Discuss Lifeguards what they do, where they are and why they are there.
  • In water, practice swimming slowly to conserve energy, which stroke is best for swimming slowly.
  • Practice floating positions; which one is best?
  • Practice swimming with a buoyancy aid
  • Younger children will practice getting in and out of the water safely.
  • Older children will learn to tread water and hold the position for up to 2 minutes.
  • Older children will learn the “HELP” position and Shout, signal, rescue (Possibly Huddle position if we are allowed)
  • Older children practice rescuing each other with ropes, torpedo buoys etc.
