We’ve completed the Teignmouth Lido decarbonisation project as part of our Carbon Action Plan to phase out the use of fossil fuel energy across our council-owned sites. The project will reduce our carbon footprint by 63 tonnes CO2 per year, the equivalent of taking 35 cars off the road, and make a vital contribution to achieving our climate change mitigation targets.

Decarbonisation project air source heat pump.

The new air source heat pump has replaced gas-fired heating to supply the swimming pool and changing rooms with low carbon heat. The electrically-powered heat pump works by capturing and upgrading heat from the air.

Decarbonisation project cable and electronics.

The sun terrace has been fitted with 40kW of solar photovoltaic panels to supply the new heating system with low carbon electricity. The solar panels are able to capture sunlight and convert it into useful electricity to supply the site directly.

Decarbonisation solar panels.

A 50kWh battery energy store will capture excess solar electricity generation to increase the consumption of renewable energy generated on site. The system works by storing excess off-peak solar generation in lithium-ion batteries, and by releasing energy during periods of peak demand.
