Considering a Career in Leisure?

If you want to work in a safe, enjoyable and rewarding environment, meeting new people and working as part of a team to help customers and ensuring the wellbeing of others, you could work in a leisure facility or health club as a lifeguard or pool emergency responder.

The new CIMSPA-endorsed Pool Lifeguarding qualification aligns lifeguard and First Aid at Work revalidations for the first time in the industry on a 3-year process.

Developed with the latest industry research, the qualification is designed to train learners in all aspects of pool rescue, CPR techniques, first aid, dealing with poolside emergencies, and all other skills needed for the role of a modern lifeguard.

How Will the Qualification Benefit You?

  • Created by STA’s lifesaving experts, providing you with quality training
  • Training is in accordance with the National Occupational Standards, HSG179 Managing Health and Safety in Swimming Pools (including its new protocols that no longer require lifeguard qualifications to be revalidated every 2 years) and British Standard BS EN 15288 Part 2, Safety Requirements for Operations
  • Regulated by Ofqual and Accredited by SQA Accreditation
  • Meets CIMSPA’s employer-led lifeguard professional standard
  • It will allow you to gain active employment as a pool lifeguard
  • Includes the First Aid at Work syllabus, meaning that you can also act as a first aider using your Pool Lifeguarding qualification without having to attend a separate first aid course.

When You Get Your Qualification

  • It lasts for 3 years, an industry first which aligns lifeguard and First Aid at Work revalidations
  • A new flexible approach to ongoing training can be pre-planned in advance and organised at times which suit the needs of the leisure facility—simplifying your revalidation process.

How to Take Your Qualification Further

Becoming a lifeguard is usually the first step for people who build a career in the leisure industry. From working as a lifeguard, you will observe swimming lessons, aquatic fitness classes, deal with customers and test pool water. You may find that you wish to do move on to additional courses, such as swimming teaching or pool plant so that you can broaden your knowledge, take on more duties and build up your career in the leisure industry!
